Overview

Nestled in the heart of Johor Bahru at 185, Jalan Sri Pelangi, Shik Gaek Korean Family Restaurant is a true gem for those seeking an authentic Korean dining experience. This restaurant shines as a haven for families and groups who appreciate rich flavors and generous portions, especially when it comes to Korean BBQ.

The star attraction is undoubtedly their Korean BBQ sets, where quality meats meet expert grilling service. Unlike many places that leave you to handle the grill, here the attentive staff take full care of it, allowing diners to focus entirely on the flavors and the shared experience. Whether you opt for the pork or wagyu beef sets, each plate bursts with marinated, tender cuts that capture the essence of Korean cuisine.

Beyond BBQ, Shik Gaek offers a variety of standout dishes that deliver comfort and tradition on every bite. The ginseng chicken soup is a soul-warming highlight—rich in broth and tender enough to fall off the bone, complemented perfectly by glutinous rice for a hearty finish. Seafood lovers will be pleased with the fresh grilled saba fish, its crisp skin and subtle seasoning offering a delicate balance alongside the tangy soy sauce and wasabi.

The seafood onion pancake is another must-try; its thin crispy edges and ingredient-packed interior avoid the heaviness that often plagues similar dishes. For noodles enthusiasts, the chewy cold buckwheat noodles served with mustard and vinegar provide a refreshing contrast, adding variety to the meal’s texture and temperature. The plethora of banchan (side dishes) elevates the entire dining experience, ranging from classic to playful choices—such as the uniquely sweet candied potatoes—that encourage multiple refills and shared delight.

Shik Gaek’s ambiance is warm and inviting, consistently praised for its comfort and quiet atmosphere even during busier times. This makes it ideal for families, casual meetups, and those who cherish relaxed yet flavorful dining. It’s no surprise that many patrons have made it their regular spot for both lunch and dinner, appreciating the balanced mix of quality, taste, and portion size.

Ultimately, Shik Gaek Korean Family Restaurant is not just about food. It’s about the experience of savoring well-crafted Korean classics in a space that welcomes you like family. Whether it’s your first visit or a long-standing tradition, each meal here promises authenticity, generosity, and a genuine connection with Korean culinary culture.

One of my go-to Korean BBQ spots in JB. Everything on the menu is worth ordering! They grill the meats for you, which makes the experience even better. The marinated meats are super flavorful, side dishes are so good I always go for refills, and the kimchi soup tastes really authentic. Crowded on weekends, and they offer lunch sets on weekdays.

The sides. Omg the sides…. I think there were like 10? And everything was good the meat pancakes and the cockles were my favorite. I ate so much… that could hardly eat the set we ordered. We ordered the beef set for 2-3 which came with marinated beef, saba, bimbimbap and kimchi soup. It was definitely enough for 3 to maybe 4. Just the 2 of us was hard to finish everything. The Saba was a huge piece enough to feed 4 pax. This is my new favorite KBBQ in JB now :)

(????????????????) ???????????????? ????◯???? ???????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????? ???????????????? the seafood pancake was packed w ingredients, wasn’t too floury & had a nice thin crisp edge! def one of the better ones I have tried imo the grilled saba fish was rly fresh & paired well w the soy sauce & wasabi as for the ginseng chicken soup, the richness of the soup hit right away from the first bite & the ginseng chicken was tender, the kind that js falls off the bone!! it also came w glutinous rice which added a hearty & comforting touch to the dish ????◯???? ???????????????????? ???????????????? ???????????????????????????? (????????????) [???????? 28] the chewy buckwheat noodles was served a bowl of cold broth on the side— best eaten right away when its served to avoid the noodles from clumping tgt! we alm forgotten abt it LOL but thankfully the noodles were still chewy enough also came w mustard & vinegar for that extra kick but i prefer it as it is overall, I have to say the highlight was def the svc— the staff were spr friendly & attentive, helping us to portion the noodles and grill the meat!! wld 100% revisit— this is my second time visiting & it didn’t disappoint heheh

Dropped by this place for the first time as it came highly recommended by my family. I have definitely passed by this location numerous times while in Johor Bahru, but had never once dropped in as the shop’s facade is very low-key. Upon entering, the place looks pretty quaint and I very much loved the very spacious-feeling dining table we were placed at. The staff were extremely hospitable and provided very great service! Probably one of the best in JB I have to say! What really struck me was their marinated meats! It is indeed by far the Best I have had in many Korean restaurants! Typically, most Korean restaurants have charcoal-grill to add that “charcoal flavour” to the meats. This place had an electric grill, which for one, lessened the smoke generated, coupled with the breezy air-conditioning and wider spaces, made the eating experience very lovely and comfortable especially for a “grill experience”. On the other hand, the flavouring of the marination was so great that even without the standardized “charcoal grill”, the meats really just tasted amazing!!! Overall, the beef set meal we had, where thankfully we can alter the fish option to a pork belly option, was just nice for a 3-pax serving. We really loved the Korean side dishes that comes coupled with the set meat grill. I believe I would definitely come back in future as it would now be one of my main go-to places for great, authentic Korean grill foods next time!
